10 otázek pro Petera Duhana / Ten questions for Peter Duhan

EBU PROJECT - Ten questions for Peter Duhan (Director General, Czech Radio)
"I believe that the number of listeners will grow because in my opinion people will start to realize more and more just how important public service media are in their lives." P. Duhan, Director General, Czech Radio

Peter Duhan has been Director General of Czech Radio since 2011. Previously, between 1991 and 1992, he was the Director General of the now defunct Czechoslovak Radio.
During a long and distinguished career, Mr Duhan has held a number of high profile editorial and leadership roles, in both television and radio.

1. Describe your job in as close as possible to 10 words.
In thirteen verbs: direct, decide, order, evaluate, supervise, provide, suggest, monitor, consult, contact, dismiss, listen – and listen to the stations, too.

2. How would your colleagues describe you?
That man with a pipe, who is quite strict but also fair, kind and communicative and there’s a tobacco scent around him.

3. What are you reading at the moment?
A great book, Meister Eckhart & Medieval Mysticism by the Czech author Jan Sokol. For me, Eckhart is the super star of medieval thinkers.

4. What is your favourite radio programme?
“Twenty minutes with Martin Veselovský” on Czech Radio – Radiožurnál, for the uncompromising nature of the presenter, the uneasiness of the politicians, and our original radio production.

5. What is your favourite smartphone or tablet app?
The application with Czech Radio streams (iRadio CR). Wherever there is a wireless available, this app always gives me quick access to the broadcast of all our stations including the digital ones. I also use the app CR News on my iPad.

6. Facebook or Twitter?
Twitter, because unlike Facebook it does not filter the newsfeed of the accounts I follow. Occasionally I log into Facebook.

7. How important is social media in your life outside the office?
In my private life I prefer personal meetings. Social media mostly represent a business tool for me. Thanks to them I can keep an eye on the responses from the public to our broadcast, as well as on topics that are currently hot in Czech society.

8. What’s the best idea that you ever had?
Having children. Job-wise: launching a talk radio station.

9. What’s the biggest mistake that you ever made in your professional life?
Having let myself be talked into having two business cell phones.

10. How will people consume media 10 years from now?
Last November we asked the listeners of Czech Radio a similar question in a project called Česko 2023 (in 2023 Czech Radio will celebrate 100 years of launching a regular broadcast). Almost eight thousand of them answered and most of them agreed that there would be no radical changes ahead.
For instance: public service radio will not lose its listeners and the number of them will stay the same in the Czech Republic, that is 2.5 million weekly listeners. However, I believe that the number of listeners will grow because in my opinion people will start to realize more and more just how important public service media are in their lives.
Only public service media can offer completely balanced and objective information and deliver non-mainstream content.
